Not so hidden Discrimination
Erik says that he taught in Bridgeport for eight years, how he survived I have no idea. His temper most certainly would have destroyed him years ago. I think that he probably taught at a private school. Erik is a condescending man who subscribes to the theory of entitlement. He detests immigrants and hates minorities. I have no idea why he is teaching at a school that is predominately black and Hispanic except for that fact that no one else wants him. Some of the comments that spew from his mouth are so degrading and demoralizing that I can’t believe no one says anything to him.
A few days ago, he confronted two boys that were roaming the halls. They clearly had no intention of attending class at that moment. Erik approached the boys and asked, “Why don’t you just go home if they aren’t planning on going to class”. The boys shrugged their shoulders and continued walking down the hall. Erik responded, “I don’t blame you for not wanting to go home. You got heat and free food. I’d stay around here too”. Does anyone think that there is anything wrong with this man? My students this year had Erik for history last year. They are all immigrants learning English and content knowledge in a class called Sheltered Content. One of my students from Erik’s class told me that he said, ” If you don’t like the United States why don’t you go back to your country. You don’t pay taxes”. It’s hard to believe that such blatant discrimination can exist from a teacher in a place that is supposed to educate and encourage our young people.
Unless Erik is a Native American, he has a country of origin that he can also take his sorry ass back to! It’s hard to imagine someone educated enough to receive a teaching certificate & probably a master’s degree, can be that ignorant!
I agree, he is completely ignorant. I told the administrator about the complaints my students had. She said she would observe him, but nothing ever came from it.
Unfortunately, there are many like him.
Yes, unfortunately. Thank you for reading.
Unfortunately, the school has not built up a sense of safety for our SC students where they would feel comfortable reporting his bigotry. I wish I would’ve heard it… I would’ve reported it!
Sadly, wouldn’t have been the only time I reported an adult in the school for spouting offensive remarks.
Those are the teachers who chose the job for summers off!
I think it’s important that we act as voice for our English Language Learner population to advocate for them. But, when you report something and nothing happens it makes you wonder.
